Are there situations that just seem too much, that we can’t even figure out why we are undergoing them? I can’t help with determining the why, but today’s Holy Nougat advises how to make them worthwhile.
“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians 1:4 NLT
So we are called to learn from our trials, at least so we can help another … hmm, that’s a serious one. Yet, it brings to mind Nehemiah’s prayer diary that has now become a key part of the biblical cannon. Nehemiah’s tale begins in exile and includes acts of treachery and abuse at the hands of fellow Israelites, Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem. They were career extortionists and Nehemiah was their mark.
As one who was literally anointed by God and appointed by the king of Persia, it seems strange to read about all that Nehemiah faced. But he faced them head on, equipped by God’s Spirit Who was with Nehemiah every single moment. And we know this because of his prayers.
When he recorded his journey it was definitely not with this future audience in mind; yet Nehemiah’s prayers assure us that God’s light is within us, guiding us through the tunnels of tribulation. Now, equipped with Nehemiah’s example, we have the assurance that we can can overcome.
What if our life was to become someone else’s blueprint for overcoming adversity? Yes, the trial is unbearable; but please God, may we use it to help another, hopefully before their situation escalates. For who knows – that might be the only redeeming feature of our own suffering. I invite us therefore to emulate Nehemiah by seeking God’s direction *and comfort* in trying situations.
