Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
“Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.” Matthew 5:37 NLT
No flowers and unnecessary justification huh.
So calling witnesses to validate our conversation in either direction isn’t necessary. (You know, like you’d say John Brown can affirm that that’s my truth.) And I guess our childhood oaths probably don’t make the cut either. But what about courtroom swearing – the ‘so help me God’ part? Is that also anathema?
I am genuinely interested in getting to the root of that issue; but since I am not rushing for a date with the law of any land … I may have to let that one pass. But it may genuinely be contradictory to God’s Word.
But let’s leave courtroom conversations aside for a few. And instead focus on our more recent conversations, negotiations and promises. Should the precision measure be applied to our word, would our yea prove to be yea? Are we known for our integrity? Can everyone count on us when we make promises?
For sometimes even the most ardent among us are challenged in keeping our word. We blithely speak with little or no consideration of the outcome; on the grounds that we were trying to extricate ourselves from an uncomfortable situation, or we were attempting to present ourselves in a positive light. And we may even justify our actions.
But God calls us to living with integrity. Even when it seems unimportant. Where we say what we mean and mean what we say.
To God. To ourselves. To others.
