Those are the words of a popular chorus sung at revival services back in the day. I’m reminded of it each time I read about the prophecies in Matthew. As we continue to reflect on future events, we might find ourselves pondering these words. Consider Today’s Holy Nougat.
Matthew 24:29 NIV
[29] “Immediately after the distress of those days “ ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
Awake and Trim Our Lamps
Siblings, it is evident that the songwriter took the Parable of the Virgins and our Nougat for the chorus. The exhortation is an invitation to all to ensure that when Christ returns, we are not found wanting. Although this isn’t stated so precisely in the prophecy, we are aware that the exact date of Christ’s return is unknown.
Self-Check
Are our lamps trimmed and ready for the bridegroom’s return? What about extra oil?
Application
Inasmuch as the Heavens responded to Y’shua’s birth and death, it is that Christ’s return will be announced boldly. This could be considered as yet another sign that refutes any claims made by others that they are the Christ. We realize that Christ hadn’t actually suggested that words would announce His return. Only signs. This lets us focus on watching the signs and seasons just as the Magi did at the time of His birth.
I’m familiar with comets making their descent from the skies, but this might either be a meteor shower or literally falling stars. At the same time, we should expect an eclipse and perhaps a simultaneous lunar eclipse. Total and complete and unnerving darkness. With the rumble of a shaking earth.
Yet, the One Whose radiance is brighter than the noonday sun will be approaching, descending from Heaven to counter the darkness. I almost want to witness it for myself. It isn’t the time to get scared or nervous. Rather, we’ve got to ensure that our lamps are all trimmed. For when He arrives, it will be late.
Point to Ponder
What do we need to do to ensure our lamps are trimmed and ready for Christ’s return?
