When Christ is our Unifier the little details matter. Details such as who we welcome at God’s table, how we treat the widows and the foreigners, how we regard ourselves in relation to those society placed on the margins. Expedience is important, but only to the extent that it does not conflict with God’s abiding and redeeming love.
These days, there are some issues which would seem socially fashionable. It is worthwhile to adopt a particular stance if we wish to be accepted in particular circles. Otherwise, we attach labels. But what does our Unifier require of us? How have we been convicted by God’s love?
In Love, who is welcomed to fellowship with us; more critically, whose table is it and what is it that invites?
In Love, do we dare to judge the Foreigner before even attempting to befriend them? Do we throw the rulebook at them when they venture near our gathered community insisting on the do’s and don’ts before inviting them in.
In Love, how do we minister to those on the margins? Who speaks for them, how, and why? Who is on the margin, and have we made the effort to simply listen before we call names?
In Love may we remember that this is not where our citizenship lies; so we to, exist in the margins. Now let’s hold that thought for a minute …
