How has life been for you lately? Today’s Holy Nougat reminds us about perspective…
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NLT
Just like a weather forecast or a traffic advisory, the Word has gone forth. As one who calls on Jesus’ name, trials are looming somewhere on the horizon. It does not matter if we’re undergoing trials right now. There are trials ahead.
But Jesus invites us to face each moment with His Peace. That’s strength for ANY journey! Evidently His Peace does not preclude disasters coming our way, rather the Peace of God is deep and abiding; equipping us to face our trials, confident of the outcome.
Unlike the disciples of Jesus’ day, we have an advantage. Reading/hearing about the various storms He stilled then – sicknesses, death, depression, social stigmatization and oppressive forces, as well as literal storms – may increase our confidence that Jesus means/meant what He said.
Of course, our own life experiences may incline us toward skepticism. That’s all right. Next time we are undergoing trials, let us literally invite Christ to help us overcome (I am fascinated with the oppositeness of the words undergo and overcome, for it affirms the impact of Jesus on our situation).
Let us also be very honest to confess our doubts, concerns or confidence as the case may be. While confessing, we might even identify what is causing the niggle of fear, doubt or confidence and ensure that it does not overpower Christ’s Peace. Having invited Christ’s Peace, we watch God work in and for us! When our focus shifts from the trial to our WayMaker, Peace Restorer, and Joy Giver – we can face that storm.
