Nougat 29
Years ago, my sister taught me about prophe-lie, which is a false prophecy given as though it was genuine. In today’s Holy Nougat
“You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us.” 2 Corinthians 2:17 NLT
I almost fell out of my chair to see the NLT used ‘hucksters’ to describe false prophets. A huckster is a door to door salesperson or a vendor in a market. Sometimes they are well received, but often it was perceived that hucksters sold worthless items or items sourced dishonestly.
Given the definition, we might be tempted to start our own ‘witch hunt’ to identify all the spiritual hucksters around us. While that may be a worthwhile endeavor, our energies are better spent absorbing God’s Word to the extent that no one can come confuse us. We may also choose to deepen our relationship with God so that we are tuned to God’s frequency and naught else.
We know that being in the household of faith does not exempt us from spiritual hustles. Just about every saint faced the hustle; some overcame. Overcoming was the result of their personal relationship with God. We can also overcome.
Although I began with encouraging us to overcome the hustle presented by hucksters; the real caution is that we avoid becoming hucksters ourselves. In a world filled with glamorous and glittery televangelists, it’s easy to be tempted by the lifestyle.

As we continue on life’s journey, I pray we are open to the move of God’s Spirit in our lives. And whether in full time or even occasional Ministry, we will not be seen as hucksters, but as genuine representatives of the Most High God.
