One of my favorite Nigerian singers has a song that reminds us to always be worshipful. Rather than simply saying, ‘all things work together for good …’ he sees in our God endless possibilities. Many of us proclaim this, even if we’re not singing that song. But do we really believe it? This and more to contemplate as we consider Today’s Holy Nougat™️

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬-‭29‬ ‭NLT‬‬

All things … from our God of possibilities

I recall the WCC assembly slogan during worship one day reminding us that ‘All means All!’ Although it was really in reference to our welcome at God’s table; it is generally accepted that all refers to the sum of totality of a group of elements. So God’s promise of all things refers to every situation under God’s directive.

Our question then is about what it is that we understand to be under God’s directive and grace. For the most part, we say this. But our actions and words suggest that we don’t always see everything in our lives being under God’s jurisdiction. With that, it becomes all the more difficult to conceive God’s will (perfect or permissive) being perfected for good.

I guess it’s about the medium and long-term outcomes of life situations that were required to note, and not just this moment. Moreover, this letter offers encouragement in suffering for believers who may have been questioning the merits of their faith under persecution. Siblings, I dare suggest that we are not alone in feelings of doubt when life is living. And for the record, when all is great, it’s also working for good – for God-lovers in alignment with God’s plan!

So if there’s absolutely no good to be seen in our now situation, we might have to double check the state of our relationship with God. If we’re confirmed God-lovers, then whatever comes our way, we know that our Lord has a handle on it.

May all we seek be found in Christ
