So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. 1 Corinthians 15:58
Working for the Lord is no easy task. For, the enemy of our souls is ALWAYS on the prowl, seeking ways to thwart the project or discourage us. Think Moses, Joseph, or even Nehemiah. They faced loads of opposition on the job. But they persevered.
This call to work for the Lord is not merely about brain or brown. We are invited to work joyfully. That is, infused with loads of enthusiasm. Before we agree that that’s exceptionally simple, let’s recall that most forms of employment are thankless jobs. Not much room for drumming up joy from the folks around us. At least not always. So that joyful existence ought to come from within.
Moreover, it’s not solely about being a cheerleader for Jesus. It’s about pride of workmanship (no sloppy half-hearted work), it’s about desire to please God, it’s about our testimony to others through what we do. One writer says “preach the gospel, use words where necessary”.
This enthusiasm ought to be intrinsic, but must have huge doses of Holy Spirit anointing to keep us going. Otherwise, we shall be spiritually sick from the strain, or we sometimes lose momentum. (And with all that, I tell you, there are still moments when we’ll falter. But God … )
