She sat in the university’s preliminary Math class wondering whether she’d entered an alternate universe. Nothing made sense. They were doing ‘Pure and Applied Math’, she thought it was regular Math. It was out of her league. Before she could utter ‘Lord, help!’ a young lady and later a male sat beside and behind her.
They offered to interpret what the professor was saying. She was elated, as it felt as if they had been sent specifically for her rescue. It is quite possible, as God has acted like that before. Not only to the Ethiopian eunuch, but even at Pentecost. We learn more as we consider Today’s Holy Nougat
Acts 2:8, 11b CEVDCI
[8] Then why do we hear them speaking our very own languages?
[11] … Some of us were born Jews, and others of us have chosen to be Jews. Yet we all hear them using our own languages to tell the wonderful things God has done.
Sent to Minister Directly
It was the day of the wheat harvest, the time for yet another festival of praise to YHWH. Jews from every and anywhere were in the city. There was enough for an overflow. Y’shua’s former disciples were also there in Jerusalem, all eleven of them as Y’shua instructed. They were sent to testify about Jesus … but they were not priests or orators. Whatever happened would not only be outside their natural skill set, but it would also have been outside their comfort zone and calling.
Self-Check
How do we respond when God is to situate us outside of our comfort zone?
Digging Deeper
Yet, despite their lack of capacity, the miraculous occurred. It was more than what they’d observed before – the miracle occurred with and to them!
Siblings, God’s Spirit visibly rested upon each of Y’shua’s disciples (it may have been the Seventy-Two and not just the Eleven). The anointing emboldened them to speak in the languages of the Jews gathered in their midst! The ordinary disciples were sent forth for an extraordinary harvest. Y’shua’s invitation in Matthew 4:19 was now a reality. The disciples were harvesting on behalf of God’s new empire.
The call and the sending are not exclusive to Jesus’ former disciples. We are part of God’s harvesting crew who’ve been sent to diverse places as witnesses of God’s grace. Our message is for old believers who’ve gotten complacent, for new believers seeking their way, and unbelievers who don’t know about salvation.
It doesn’t matter that we’ve never been to seminary. The personal and direct testimony is often a powerful tool to help us find our way home to Y’shua. We don’t have to rehearse or script it, as Y’shua is the Author of our story. When we allow God’s Spirit access, we can rest assured that the Trinity will work the details out.
Sometimes, it isn’t our personal testimony. Rather, our actions bear witness to God’s grace as it did in the university lecture theatre. Both the people who aided the young lady spoke Pure and Applied Math. The female was a believer. After helping the young lady, she followed up with an invitation to fellowship. The Gospel message was spoken in her act of grace and strengthened by the invitation to fellowship. That’s another way in which God sends us.
Point to Ponder
What Gospel language do we speak and how often do we use it? It may be time to ask God to send us out in the power of God’s Spirit.
