Hi
Many persons have had a ‘Go-to’ during this season – a Word or song to keep us sane amidst all this. Today’s Holy Nougat indicates that it’s actually not strange at all.
“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”
Psalms 40:3 NIV
In this Psalm of David, we deduce that he had been on a journey to death’s door and back. It makes sense for many of us, because we too, have been there – whether during Covid-19 or through our own Valley of Shadows. The joy of this Psalm is in the psalmist’s assurance during the Time – he waited patiently on the Lord and The Lord heard (Verse 1) AND delivered him (David) from the miry pit!!!(Verse 2)
David expected that he would be delivered by God! That’s why he waited Patiently. Despite his location – the pit of despair, the fires of tribulation, the Valley of Shadows – David knew that God could rescue him. (Many of us are not so blessed with that assurance! We still struggle with depression or other issues and we are not sure that God is with us. And when we seek help, condemnation is our portion from others!!!) And God did exactly that, plus.
For we are told, part of the deliverance process included receiving a New Song, a hymn of Praise that assured him (David) God was with him and in control. David was familiar with the power of music in helping persons with mental illness. That’s how God snuck him in the palace in the first place. And while his pit may have not been Despair, fear could have been a contending factor to overcome. David, as he sang, chose to fear God!
Whatever it is that you are undergoing, I pray that David’s testimony will remind you of God’s love; even in the miry pit! You might even find yourself penning words of comfort and assurance. Is there a (new) song that sustained you through the season? Some friends sent a few, but my main Go-To have been ‘Nara, Ekele Mo’ and ‘Your Goodness is running After Me’. They’re not new songs but have definitely been my mainstay for the season.
I pray that you feel the tangible embrace of Christ wherever you are in your circumstances today. God bless you
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
