Today’s Holy Nougat is a bit scary and yet comforting at the same time

“You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:4-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Ever had words not come from your mouth and thought, ’Well, I didn’t say it!’ It’s great if you haven’t. For the rest of us, erm … was that the first thing to cross your mind when you read the nougat? It’s a little unnerving to find that Jesus knows our thoughts before we say them. And in my mind’s eye I see God shaking the head, saying, ’I told you not to say it.’ In those moments, my disappointment with myself is very real.

The temptation of course, is to ask God, ’why would you allow me to even say such things?’ Couldn’t you have stopped me Lord?’ Well, I don’t know about you, but I think I hear God’s reply, ‘I did. You wouldn’t listen.’ And I shake my head remembering the check in my spirit that I ignored or almost choked. In those moments I resolve to do better; like Peter and his runaway mouth. The good news is – Peter’s mouth got managed by the Spirit of our God Who knows what we say before we say. Our God can manage our mouths too, when we yield.

Then there’s the times when we know God would be pleased with what we say, not just the words, but for the sentiments behind them. When that happens without human affirmation, it might be consoling to remember that someone noticed what we said and did. Hold that assurance and allow it to remind you that your words matter to God, even when it feels otherwise.

So yes, it’s scary good and awesomely splendid that God knows our thoughts, let’s make sure God’s pleased with them.

May all we seek be found in Christ
