How detached are we in responding to political crises locally and Internationally? Can detachment really be a viable approach to news around us? Even when we have the requisite resources to be part of the desired change? Something to consider while reading today’s Holy Nougat™
Mordecai sent this reply to Esther: “Don’t think for a moment that because you’re in the palace you will escape when all other Jews are killed. Esther 4:13 NLT
Somehow, it seems that Esther had not factored in her own identity as part of the equation when Mordecai invited her intervention with the King. As an undercover Jew, her welfare would have been under as much threat as the others. Technically, had she not agreed to get involved, Esther was choosing to seal her own fate by refusing to speak to the King on the Jews behalf.
Does Esther’s predicament resonate? Where detachment seemed like a viable option but was actually danger? Consider the poem below which reminds us that we’re all related;
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me
Dare we be the difference which our communities need?
