Here’s today’s Holy Nougat™
“Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Luke 12:33 NLT
While persuing my degree in theology a few years ago, I discovered that there is a group of academics whose sole purpose for meeting is to discover the “historical” Jesus. Part of their goal is to determine which miracles, sayings and other actions can be directly proven to be Jesus’s. When I encounter a nougat such as this morsel set before us, I’m tempted to consider what their verdict would be.
For many of us, this would be one of the first to go, especially in light of the content … Sell all that we possess, so that the poor might benefit; most definitely NOT a preferred Jesus statement. However, in light of the incentive plan, following Jesus may prove materially beneficial to the Jesus follower.
What about if/when we are the Poor, dependent upon others for our livelihood? Would our opinion about the valuables shift ever so slightly? Or would we continue to dissect and evaluate every jot and tittle.
Rather than put that to the test, let us live as though Jesus meant each one for us to obey. So let’s begin right now by sharing with those in need.
