By now, you should have heard that Fidel Castro, Cuban revolutionary and icon, has died. A very timely reminder for us to live what we believe, conscious that we only live once so we ought to work out our purpose quickly.
Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
This is the end of the matter; all hath been heard: fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13 ASV
Straightforward directions for fulfilling our purpose isn’t it. And yet, not as easily adhered to. Why?
Fear God – considering that we are God’s handiwork, fearing (also read respecting and reverencing) God should come naturally right. Not with us also having the freedom to think, do and be. Some of our life experiences have been such that we have denied God’s existence, or questioned God’s love. Could today be the chance to reconnect with God?
Obey the commandments – that’s when things get really interesting. We each have applied our own priority listing on the Commandments, whether the “Big Ten, or the multiple others found in the Older Covenant. And no, we’re not going to debate about them. Rather, I wish to point us to the “Big Two” clearly delineated in the New Covenant. Matthew 22:36-40 provides the basis for ALL the commandments – loving God with every fibre of our being, and loving our neighbour as we love ourselves. (First we have to love ourselves). The Love commandment has become one of the identifying marks of Jesus’s ministry. What about ours?
Now I can’t speak for Castro – but then, he’s run his race – but I seek to urge each of us to walk in our original purpose, our ‘manifest destiny’, worthy of the vocation to which we are called. A life of love and selflessness. It shouldn’t be that hard, right?
