What does our Yes to God signify? Consider today’s Holy Nougat

“Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭1:38‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

What a yes! Mary had NO blueprint of God’s step by step plan; but there she was – accepting God’s invitation to literally co-create with God.

Did she say Yes to God just because an angel said ‘Hi Mary, God is very pleased with you.’ ? I agree that she would be honored; but I strongly doubt that was a good enough reason. Her yes wasn’t response to flattery. In fact, she asked a few questions for clarification. And she counted the cost.

Mary’s yes demonstrates the kind of Faith that moves mountains and should have been included in Hebrews Hall of Faith. For if Faith, the size of a mustard seed moves mountains; Mary’s helped transform the world. Just think; as a young woman, she KNEW what the consequences of being ‘found’ pregnant and unmarried entailed. Given that the punishment could include death by stoning; I am sure that was drilled in girls at an early age. Yet Mary said yes.

This is like Abraham climbing a mountain with the son of Promise; assured that even if God permitted that sacrifice; God would restore Isaac to him (see Genesis 22). I suspect that in saying Yes, Mary invited God to do with her as God did for Abraham: to make provision for her THROUGH the subsequent outcomes of her yielding.

And that’s what Submission to God entails. Us recognizing that there may be danger lurking in the shadows of our Yes to God; but saying yes anyway. Saying to God, ‘Lord do as You please’ and meaning it ALL the way. Surrendering our everything to God’s plan and purpose
