Have you been moved by the media reports of the earthquakes, mudslides, hurricanes or refugee crises? Do you think God is concerned about people like those? What are we supposed to do in the face of abject suffering? Something to chew on along with today’s Holy Nougat™
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Matthew 9:36 KJV
Now let’s revisit the news headlines. Isn’t it just as desperate and uncannily similar to the conditions described in Jesus’ day?
And, worse yet, many of THESE multitudes have no clue about the love of God unless WE help them to see and hear a different Gospel. Of course, that requires a mindset which is compassionate to God’s people.
So what if s/he doesn’t believe in the Christian God? Do we condemn them, or resist helping them because they’re different? Certainly not. Compassion requires seeing past the present situation to the prayer behind. It’s affirming the humanity of another in sometimes dehumanising situations.
With those in need of the Good News being scattered abroad them and now, we have a responsibility to share locally and further afield. Too many are dying for us to be lackadaisical and stand-offish.
Would you be open to building bridges of hope for those in need? Let’s pray about it. And having prayed and listened, let’s act on God’s direction. (And before you say no, just think of your own situation and whether you’d wish to receive help).
Remember, it doesn’t have to be cash, it could be opening home, providing clothing and food or even a prayer …
