“But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the Lord alone.”” Jonah 2:9 NLT
Having defied God’s call on his life – at least twice – Jonah is rescued from himself. Yes, he is literally rescued from drowning; but it was also him being rescued from self destruction. And this praise comes ‘from the inside’ (the belly of a fish)
Jonah’s vow to comply and obey ought to be viewed in light of this; as we realize that this is Jonah’s repentance, thanks-giving, rededication and yielding to God’s will. The offering of sacrices speaks to his repentance for disobedience and gratitude for life. Jonah rededicates himself to the task and acknowledges the Source of his existence.
What do we do when confronted with our own sins? Are we open to acknowledge God’s gracious gifts of life de and forgiveness? Do we brush off ourselves and having repented, resume the task set before us? Unfortunately, I have no answer for we each must work this our with the Almighty.
I pray we can experience the freedom which God’s forgiveness and salvation offers in the face of our sins.
