Torn

Pilate is at the moment of decision. All the evidence is in, he’s even offered the possibility for Jesus’ pardon, and the vox populei is about to decide. If this were a movie, the suspense music would be queued and everyone waits with bated breath.

Pilate’s wife appears.

She is agitated.

She cannot be pacified by those in the outer courts …

She demands to speak with her husband …

NOW

In hushed tones she speaks with her husband.

Meanwhile, the Chief Priests and elders are wreaking havoc, stirring up the crowd to near insurrection, trying to convince them to choose Barabbas over Jesus

Pilate’s wife has finished speaking. Her husband is pale. He is in a quandary. For he knows that when his wife felt moved to interrupt his session in court, whatever she says is worth listening to.

He tries to read the crowd, but his wife’s premonition weighs heavily on his mind. It seems to confirm the hesitancy in his decision regarding that Messiah set before him. There’s just something – almost other worldly – about the other Jesus. ‘Don’t let them drag you into speaking or doing harm against That Man. He’s innocent.

Husband, I beg you

“Leave that innocent man alone. I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night.” – please. Do this for us!’

The words keep echoing in his head. He had a decision to make. For if those people succumb to the Chief Priests’ and Elders’ demands … he’ll be obliged to sentence an innocent man.

Perhaps, if they do that, he could …

When we’re caught between a rock and a hard place in life; unlike Pilate, we have recourse in turning to The Rock of our Salvation. May we have the wisdom and knowledge to seek His face.
