Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home.
Matthew 14:22 NLT
They had just been party to the feeding of the 5000. Jesus was taking a break without them or anyone else being with hiin.
Perhaps He sought to recharge before the next divine encounter (we hardly see Jesus at rest). Maybe He desired the disciples to be apart from Him so that they could better appreciate what happened next. What we do know, is that the disciples eventually obeyed Jesus. Eventually, for it seems they had to be convinced to leave Him there.
Which invites the question, how readily do we respond to God’s prompting through the Holy Spirit?
May God’s grace sustain us in our seasons of disobedience.
