“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves in tender compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience— bearing with one another and forgiving each other, if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord pardoned you, so also you must pardon others. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfect harmony.” Colossians‬ ‭3:12-14‬ ‭TLV‬‬

Aaah I tell you; this underpiece called Humility is a delicate garment. It’s defined as the ability to have a low/modest view of one’s importance. Per the world’s standards, we ought to have it but not acknowledge that we do. As it is a quality others ought to comment on. To some extent that is true. I am uncomfortable hearing someone proclaim themselves humble – I don’t get that. Because it is as though our Humility has become a matter of pride. I am conscious though, that for fear of being prideful, many go to the other extreme, not even open to receiving compliments; lest it gets to the head. Balance is necessary. That’s where a godly take on Humility is helpful.

I’ve seen commentaries argue that godly Humility is about our comparing ourselves to God. That is still not helpful for me, as comparing myself to Christ guarantees that I am not quite there, but does not always help for practical aspects of life – skills and natural talent.

And it’s the natural talent that helps us figure Humility out. For, natural talent is often considered God-given. Not to be taken for granted (although we might be guilty of that at times); but to be used to generate employment, joy and also for God’s glory.

As people of faith, we can exercise Humility by acknowledging the Source of our gifts and skills. Like when Paul acknowledges that all he is is by God’s grace and for God’s glory. Further, we can also opt to dedicate same to God. As it relates to self-importance; I think Jesus already warned us that if we get ahead of ourselves we will be abased (Matthew 23:12). Again, it’s about the Source.

We ought to be mindful of who and Whose we are. But not to the extent that we look down on others. Not at all. That was part of Saul’s downfall prior to his conversion – he thought his duty was judge and jury for the wayward believers (the Christians). God woke him up. Rather, we allow our status to affirm ourselves when we are overlooked ; and to help affirm others who are undervalued.

That, for me, is godly Humility. Knowing who and Whose we are, and living it so others may live in dignity; for the glory of God.

A delicate piece of underwear; but definitely essential piece for our wardrobe.
