Have you ever been guilty of consulting with everyone about a problem, except for God? And if so, are you aware that it is offensive to God? Consider Today’s Holy Nougat
2 Chronicles 16:7 NIV
[7] At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.
Reliance on Whom
I knew I knew better, but I up and asked anyways. They didn’t claim to be clairvoyant, it wasn’t an area of expertise, so I’m really not sure why I asked. Perhaps because we worked on similar things. I got a vague response and an affirmation. Later, the idea was implemented with zero reference to me!
True, they might have had a similar idea, but I also suspect my thoughts provided extra fodder for fine tuning. And, if it was a novel idea, well – no time was wasted on implementation. I kinda learned my lesson – for that type of idea.
Unlike me, Asa was king of Israel. He had personally benefited from God’s intervention in prior battles. Like me, Asa bypassed prayer (nor did he opt to consult with the prophet), he simply made a treaty with an ally (~ish).
Obviously we hadn’t checked in with Bob (Marley) – ‘some will eat and drink with you, then behind them su-su ‘pon you, only your friend know your secrets, so only he could reveal it …’ (‘Who the Cap Fit’ Bob Marley & the Wailers, written by Aston and Carlton Barrett). For siblings, we must learn from Asa and Jesus that ‘a no everything good fi eat good fi talk’. Sometimes if we feel that we need human counsel or support, we ought to vet them.
Better yet, we can look to God, Who is always available and won’t abuse our trust. And let me tell you – God’s track record is impressive! Not only for back in the day. But don’t take my word for it, try God for yourself and see how that works for you. And when God comes through for you, brag a bit in your diary or share the praise report with us others.
So Lord, grant us wisdom in knowing with whomto consult after we come to you about anything. Be glorified by our actions we pray, in Jesus name amen
