“So Jacob arrived in shalom to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram, and camped right in front of the city. He purchased the portion of the field there where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for 100 pieces of money.” Genesis 33:18-19 TLV
But this was NOT the agreement! This wasn’t how all that scheming and deception was supposed to end, was it? I don’t know my peeps It’s as if all he did to ensure the fulfillment of the prophecy went up in smoke.
Remember that Jacob had first traded the right of the firstborn from his brother (Genesis 25) at least two decades prior; and then tricked their dad to confirm that he received the blessings reserved for the firstborn; and insisted that God return him IN shalom to his inheritance (Genesis 28)? Yeah
What happened to all that?
I suspect that fear and remorse and the unresolved rift with his twin stood in the way. Plus; he was a broken man – not broken down destroyed; but spiritually broken – tamed of the wildness; though traces of mistrust still clung to him. He had been before God, wrestled with God and found in God what he desired. But he was still very much a human.
And that’s the rub.
In our humanity we sometimes lose sight of the Prize of God’s higher calling. And that may cost us by way of our coming into our own transformation.
What fears; what issues still remain a stumbling block between us and God? Is it time to let go? In Christ’s love and grace . .
