Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
“He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd.” Luke 19:3 NLT
Zaccheus was not suddenly short. The biblical text indicates that he was exceptionally successful at what he did (albeit through foul means). It suggests that his disability had not restricted him from realizing his dreams. And there, in the height of his lucrative career, Zach’s new desire was to have his very own Jesus experience, even if it meant only seeing Him from afar off.
He wanted to see Him. Just to see Him for himself. He isn’t recorded as thinking, ‘If I could only see Him, my life will change.’ We know however, that Zaccheus desired a look at Jesus. And we are also told that his physical stature was a serious challenge to his desire.
Sometimes our lives are challenged by disabilities; literal and/or circumstantial. It could be as simple as being too tall for the seat on a plane, or requiring assistance to get around after an eye exam, or needing special instruments to help us see or hear better. The truth is, in the moment when we are without the resources to ‘fix’ our disability, we may find ourselves at the mercy of others or losing hope.
Yet Zaccheus did not lose hope. Nor did his short stature inhibit his ambitions. He examined the options round about him and later found a brilliant solution! He SAW Jesus for himself!
Are there persons in our sphere of influence who possess obvious disabilities? Do they require assistance to realize their dream?
Perhaps we are being invited to be part of their solution.
What impedes our up front and personal look at Jesus? It is individual as each of us has our own challenge. What are the resources in our possession or round about us which may help us realize our dream of encountering Jesus?
Perhaps today we ought to be a Zaccheus.
