The mark of a good leader is willingness to take responsibility for one’s words and actions. But no one said Herod was a good leader. Not with his track record. His wife was first married to his brother, until THEY met. Then all bets were off, and, unlike David, they were not open to discipline or censure.
Herod seemed to be a late conspirator to his wife’s evil plan, but a conspirator nonetheless was he. Having arranged for his stepdaughter to dance for his guests, Herod is so stirred he promised her up to half the kingdom. What a dance!!!!! She asked for proof that John the Baptist had been executed.
Then Herod regretted his promise. But he had his guests to think about. To save face Herod agrees to murder. Of course, he didn’t actually behead John. But he authorized it. But it’s still Murder. Cold-blooded, premeditated murder. “To save face” murder.
Oftentimes we judge Herod for his irresponsibility, and his misplaced integrity. But can we see how we might devolve into similar acts of madness, mayhem, and murder? (Although this is very extreme). Furthermore, can we see how pride might become our downfall. Especially when it’s coupled with unconfessed sin.
Hmmmn? Ouch!!!
Now what? Do we go with the crowd, desire our convictions? Do we repent and confess our other sins to God?
Hmmmn, ouch.
