Who’s afraid of the bogeyman?

Do you realize that there’s basically an entire industry/economy built around fear? Reality tv, news, sports, movies, entertainment spaces and events all capitalizing on our penchant for worry. The worst part is that it’s not quite a modern or secular phenomenon. At least, not if we believe the evidenciary proof of today’s Holy Nougat

12 men went to spy in Canaan; 10 were bad and 2 were good!
What did they see when they spied in Canaan; 10 were bad and 2 were good
Some saw giants great and tall
Some saw grapes in clusters fall
Some saw God Who was in it all
10 were bad and 2 were good!
Ironically, though we may find fault with the response of the Hebrew spies following their scouting trip; many of us are no different. Especially when we have bought into the fear phenomenon pervading our religion and culture. Let’s think about our most recent obstacle – what was our default response? Moreover, when someone else is undergoing, as Christi followers do we offer hope or perpetuate fear and hearsay? Would we be the ‘go to’ for giants or grapes? Is God even included in our rhetoric outside of blithe platitudes? (Unfortunately I have been guilty of giants on occasion, though I’m working on recognizing grapes in the uncharted territory)
Consider Caleb, the narrator of this speech. He was reminding Joshua of the facts (of which Joshua was very intimately acquainted as the only other believer among the 12) because he was about to claim more uncharted territory. He had no doubt about who fought his battles. No fear factor as a result!!
The God who fought for Caleb is still in the business of fighting the enemy of our souls! O yes indeedy!!! So we have reason to hope; to rejoice; to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.
Today; let us choose faith over fear; especially when on the verge of claiming our portion of God’s promises.
