Hello,
While having my devotion recently I was struck by the essence of today’s Holy Nougat It’s a composite of verses, but I’ve separated bits for us to hear the essence. Chew slowly
“But he answered and said, It is written …
Jesus said unto him, Again it is written …
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written …
Matthew 4:4a, 7a, 10a ASV
How well do we know the Written Word – do we barely scratch the surface while thanking God for Google search or Siri; know enough to win ribbons and other prizes or help ourselves during sermons or other such events; or have we hidden the Word in our hearts so we might not sin (Psalm 119:11)?
Interesting concept, hiding God’s Word in our hearts – for we are reminded that we speak from the surplus in our hearts (Luke 6:45). So storing God’s Word isn’t about back burner living; rather, we are called, like Jesus, to use God’s Word for offense and defense against the enemy of our souls. Hence, we are reminded in Ephesians 6 and Hebrews 12 that the Word is for spiritual warfare and not only edification.
I’d also argue that it is instructive to know God’s Word so we have confidence when we petition the throne. James 4 reminds us that we sometimes petition without confidence or wisdom, hence our prayers have limited potency. Knowing God’s promises also brings comfort and assurance when we need direction or reminders of God’s presence, presience, provision and protection.
May God’s Word bring us strength for life’s journey, light for the path, protective armory for life’s battles and food for our souls today and always
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
