“He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”” Genesis 3:10 NLT
What triggered the fear? The literal state of undress, or the newfound discernment that God would ‘see’ beyond the surface that he had sinned?
Perhaps both are correct. However, in the ‘sequel’, God provides long term clothing from animal skin; which offers the possibility that Adam was naked from creation. The shift was in his awareness of what that meant.
Adam had gained knowledge of his true state before God. Something disappeared which could not easily be restored. At least not naturally. And it impacted Adam’s ability to be comfortable in God’s presence. For while Ignorance is no excuse for (breaking) the law; Knowledge (especially of Good and Evil), carries responsibility. And he could not pretend it didn’t exist.
His response – fear. And in fearfulness, Adam hid. From his Maker. From the One Who loved him most.
As Christians, we also have knowledge of our true state before God.
But Christ …
For, just as blood was shed to cover Adam, so it is that Christ’s Blood was shed to cover our nakedness. Our knowledge of Christ’s sacrifice also carries responsibility which pulls us God-ward to the Throne of Grace, not away from God Who knows where we are.
God invites us to the new Knowledge of Redemption through Christ’s Blood. What is our response – still Hiding or boldly approaching the Throne of Grace?
