“But the previous night God had appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and told him, “I’m warning you—leave Jacob alone!”” Genesis 31:24 NLT
I believe it was David who wrote, ‘Touch not the Lord’s anointed, but my god-hranny’s generation might have been the marketing team. For she surely told it to me a few times. For her, it meant that one did not intentionally seek war with God’s elect; and I didn’t get it’s significance.
But here we are, in the middle of this epic drama between Laban and Jacob, and the phrase is very much implied – ‘Don’t you touch my Jacob now. He’s my child!’ Isn’t that something! For at this point, we’re not quite sure if Jacob has changed or is still a trickster, but we know that God called him.
I see this as a reminder that God’s call transcends the deepest mire we can find ourselves in. An assurance of grace even when we’ve lost our way. And of course, there is the assurance for those of us who are ‘walking the straight and narrow’ while persecution seems to be dogging our lives.
God is in the midst of us, even when it seems otherwise. I pray that we each feel the presence of God in our stretched stress moments, assured that as children of God, we are in protective custody. Praying us into our breakthrough!
