It seems so incongruous that Jesus would desire to keep his identity secret. One would expect that he would proclaim it from the rooftops, hob nobbing with the rich and important, which is what we sometimes see from socially recognized VIP’s from all spheres of employment.
Yes, Jesus was a public figure. Yes Jesus was very serious about healing those with whom he interacted -physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – but he did not seek crowds out. Instead, they sought Him.
Isn’t that a valuable lesson for us today, especially those of us whose positions of power offer the tantalising temptation to expect adulation and recognition. What if we were called to help others based on our connections, but aim at anonymity? Would our egos be in agreement? I know several of us would have no trouble with that.
There are some times though, when we’d like to be acknowledged for our efforts … Just for a moment.
Lord help us help others just because; with no expectation of public recognition in THOSE moments.
