“Make and keep your promises to the LORD your God. From all around, gifts should come to the God we worship.”
Psalms 76:11 NCV
What promises have we made to God which remains outstanding or incomplete? And what motivated the promises in the first place – the desire to get our prayers answered or a desire to please God? I believe that the response to the second question may help us grasp the why of a broken promise.
When we’re internally motivated – operating from inner passion or personal interest – we may dedicate a greater commitment to our promises. And, with the wrong motivation, promises become burdensome. And that’s unfair to us and disrespectful to God.
Let’s conduct a quick self-exam: When we ask for divine intervention, how soon do we expect God’s response? And how long does it take for us to get moving on any thing we promise to do? Is there a disconnect?
Giving back to God ought to be second nature; but it often isn’t. It should be a voluntary response (natural action) in respect of all we’ve been blessed with from God. That all assumes that we understand ourselves to be blessed; which we are. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
If we speak from the abundance of our hearts, then what of our actions?
