Nougat 19

How are you? On Saturday, we found Moses rediscovering God on the backend of the wilderness. In their meeting, God self-introduced as THE God of three special people – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Today’s Holy Nougat invites us to meet Abraham-Abram, when HE met God anew.

“Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” Genesis‬ ‭12:1‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

For Abram, God was definitely about a promise (read more about the promise in verses 2-3). He and his father had begun what seems to be a similar journey some years prior. But, had that been the case the journey was aborted in Haran. (see Genesis 11 for more). Assuming that this was indeed the case, God’s call-invitation to Abram was not new to his family. The difference was, the promise was made TO him!

Not Terah his father, not Lot, his nephew, with whom he began his journey; only him.

Terah was survivEs by two sons – Abram and Nahor. Only one son received That invite. My dears, that’s the nature of the God we serve. Although God’s salvation is available to all, our invitation is personalized, individually crafted and suited to our nature.

No one else’s.

God’s invitation was personal – God told Abram to pack up and go. Likewise, God met with Moses by himself on the backend of the wilderness. Not his father in law, nor his families in Egypt. Just Moses. For sometimes, the vision we get is to be kept TO OURSELVES, not shared with others who may not share our God experience or agree with our vision. Once we confirm that it is God Who speaks to us; we need to move on God’s direction, when the time is right.

We note that Nahor, Abram’s brother, did not accompany Terah on his journey to Haran. Perhaps because he was already established – he had wife and children – we don’t know for certain. But when Terah left for Haran, Abram was not fully established, nor did his wife Sarai have children.

We know not whether Abram cried out to God to discern his purpose. But the offer he couldn’t refuse was customized to his needs. We don’t know that Moses lamented his loss of status to God; but the invitation he received would place him at the helm of leadership of a nation unborn. A nation that still exists today.

God’s call is custom made for our situation AND personality. God is intentional in relating to each of us, and although it may seem otherwise, God’s individualized call (gift) is truly intended to bless us.

We may feel that God is not hearing our heart’s cry, and that’s human. But, I urge us to note that Moses was on the backend of the wilderness for approximately forty years before receiving his call. God is not done with us as yet!

I urge us to prepare ourselves for we have no idea when our personal, individualized invite to get up and BE will come. What we do know is that the God of Abram will call us when the timing is right.

We find hope therefore in the assurance that the God of Abraham is our God and will bring us into whatever God has promised.
