“And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord Jehovah, thou knowest.” Ezekiel 37:3 ASV
There’s a Jamaican phrase, “What no dead no call it duppy” which perhaps would have captured Ezekiel’s reality; save for the fact that the bones were proof of death. In fact, the bones in question were past potential resurrection stage. They had separated from each other and had been in the valley for quite a while before Ezekiel saw them.
And yet, God didn’t ask about fossil fuels or powder or calcification. In fact, God moves beyond ghosts/duppies to Living, breathing human beings! Talk about God of the impossible! Why would God ask such a question?
A Valley of dry bones was not necessarily as threatening as the Valley of Shadows; but it definitely symbolized lost hope; broken dreams or desolation. I strongly doubt that Ezekiel or anyone else saw it as the Place of New Beginnings. Yet, in God’s power, that’s exactly what it was called to be. And, ironically, the new beginning was even better than the former state; as only God can make things! What a question! What an outcome (you have to read the entire chapter)! What a promise!
Can those dry bones live?
Has God asked that or a similarly impossible question of you lately? (Or have you hoped that God would ask that of you?) May God restore the broken places in our contexts to improved new beginnings.
