Nougat 18

Can you remember the childhood action chorus;

‘Watch your eyes, watch your eyes what they see

Watch your eyes, watch your eyes what they see

For there’s a Father up above looking down in tender love

Watch your eyes, watch your eyes what they see

Then it went on to ears, lips, hands, feet and self. Did you ever connect it with today’s Holy Nougat

“There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:5-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We find in this nougat not only a challenge for us as we try to move past our differences in the Faith; but also a note of Hope. For God, not us, is in control; or as per the chorus God looks down in Love.

It is possible that envisioning (ie seeing in our mind’s eye) God’s act of being ‘over all’ would be challenging for some of us. Perhaps our experience of persons being in authority has been negative – be it family, friend, foe, at the workplace or even at church. I would hasten to remind us that although God does chasten, God’s love is life transforming.

Further, if we were to envisage God as Eternal (forever existent), we might begin to grasp a different perspective on God being over us. For our thoughts may take us to different moves and interventions of God throughout time. Then we would see that by being YHWH God Who Is, Was and will continue forever to Be is Creativity creating and being; and is thus over all. Nothing surprises God; although God may be disappointed.

Of course, we note that for God to be ‘over all’; all becomes subject to God’s will and authority. And that’s the rub. Because while many of us would have God intervene in our lives when things are going wrong; we don’t always wish to be held accountable. I would say though, inasmuch as we seek to influence the actions and decisions of those we care about, we should expect the same from God. We should seek God’s approval of what we do; especially for things we consider important. That comes with the territory.

As we move through the remainder of the week, I pray that we can see where we are including God in our lives (as adviser, supervisor and LORD – YHWH). And for the moments when we do differently, may our conviction lead to repentance and renewed grace through Christ.
