Nougat 18

There is a natural tendency in us humans to hide our wrongs. But is that how it works? Consider today’s Holy Nougat

“When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Genesis 3:8 NLT

No one desires to be exposed; even when we are wrong. Perhaps it’s one of those idiosyncrasies inherited from Original Sin (or the Fall); but it is a reality of many a life. If you existed in that moment in the Garden, how would you respond to Adam? Truth be told, I would have probably showed Adam where we could hide. And with that I would have forgotten a few things.

1. God sees through our Cover-upper

There’s a school of thought which says God uncovers sin we try to cover up and covers sin we place uncovered before God. For ultimately, whether we hide in the shade, with leaves, or with the most expensive animal skin; God sees past the Cover up. Yes, God knows what we have done and when we’ve done it; even when it seems no one else does.

2. Covering Sin doesn’t cover guilt

The joy of human existence is that we are each gifted with both free will and a conscience. So even when we eliminate all trace of our guilt from the world, even if we justify ourselves; we KNOW what we have done. And to quote David, our sins are ever before us. Or, in the words of Buju Banton, we can hide from (hu)man’s but not our conscience. Hidden sin gone unconfessed before God is still sin. No matter who committed or hid it.

But

3. There’s Grace beyond my confession

If we are honest enough with ourselves, and we follow through with confession to God; God IS Honour-bound to keep God’s promise. God will forgive us. There may still be earthly consequences; but The Once And For All Time Gift of Jesus’ death and resurrection cleanses that act from the record books. (1 John 1).

This does not give us leeway to continue with the same sin again and again as infinitum.

Certainly Not

The joy of the salvation is that our giving our lives to Jesus means we should have less tolerance for all sin; especially our own. And, if we build that resistance, we should have less of the desire. In fact, sometimes when we find ourselves still committing the same sin; it may be that we haven’t surrendered it to God.

May we, by God’s Spirit, gain the courage to uncover our sins before God Who saves us by God’s Grace.
