Back in the day I arrived at school and saw a bold graffiti “Peace… through superior firepower!” I remember thinking initially thinking that it was twisted logic, but over time I have come to realize that my school mates were correct – that’s the ‘worldview’ of many political leaders. And in a weird way, it is true; we fight wars to broker peace. Even in the spiritual realm. Just think, there’s a battle for our lives and minds, and we are the prize! Consider today’s Holy Nougat in light of this thought
“and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.”
Colossians 1:20 NLT
Reconciliation generally occurs after a battle. Sides are chosen and either the winner or the loser has to decide what the friendship is worth. For each of us, God determined that we’re worth everything! Including death on the cross.
The king’s horses and the king’s men couldn’t undo the damage Humpty Dumpty suffered; but God seeks to make right the damage done to us by our own sinful nature. It is nothing short of amazing, when we think of it – that by calling on Jesus, we gain forgiveness and are restored to right relationship with God. That is what reconciliation is.
Of course, it doesn’t come without a cost. And there are two
1. We acknowledge that we have offended God and others in the past. For sin – every sin; big, little, ‘I only’, justified or not – every sin offends God. (That’s what creates the rift in the first place). Having acknowledged our offenses; we are open to repentance. Saying we are sorry. Just like that. And since we cannot clear that debt ourselves …
2. we thank God for Jesus, literally! Because He paid for our offenses with His Blood. That’s what Jesus did.
When we’re reconciled with and through Christ, it is as if we never sinned. The old offenses are canceled, and we begin anew. In thanking Jesus, we also give Him jurisdiction over our thoughts and actions and desires so that we minimize the chances of falling out of grace with God once again.
So it is true, kind of. We gain peace through superior fire power. That’s the Blood of Jesus!
