Nougat 17

There are some persons who receive these nougats whose responses always warm my heart. If I’ve forgotten to thank you; please forgive me and receive my gratitude now. Thanks bunches. Today’s Holy Nougat is about what you do.

“If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”

Romans 12:8 NLT

This business of encouragement isn’t always easy. But it is absolutely and totally necessary. Encouragement may sometimes require that we see in others what they have not yet seen in themselves. It also, includes helping find the missing pieces, especially when hope is lost. Yet encouragement is much more than optimism. And even then, it requires energies and ongoing connectivity with God’s Spirit.

One thinks of some parts of the epistles, especially those written to individuals (by Paul to Timothy), or the the persecuted churches (such as James epistle to the dispersed Jews). Phrases like ‘I always thank my God when I remember you’ come readily to mind. As does ‘Let no one despise your youth.’ Stated at the right time, these words might have telecharged the Philippi church and Timothy during difficult moments.

We can also remember Barnabas, which translates to, ‘Son of Encouragement’. I think that’s a great nickname to be given. Where folks can affirm the supporting role we play in their lives. Even to the detriment of our own success and/or career. Remember that’s what happened when Barnabas opted to support Mark by offering a redemptive opportunity of a missionary journey despite Paul’s very clear opposition? Yet Barnabas’ support must have made a difference to the young Mark, who we’re told later wrote the second Gospel. Such can be the impact of encouragement! And it can sometimes be unrecognized.

Being gifted with Encouragement from God’s Spirit demands compassion and empathy. And THAT is why we need God’s Spirit. For it is by and with God’s Spirit that we are able to sense the need and respond appropriately. We recognize that there might be someone somewhere who needs an encouraging word from God’s Spirit.

Who will go? Will you, is it me? Lord, help us to seek after Encouragement through Your Spirit, in Jesus name amen.
