Today’s Holy Nougat offers the chance to think critically about our faith. Chew slowly.
“Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”” John 20:29 NLT
Part of the challenge of being a believer in this era is the burden of proof. How does one ground one’s faith in the unseen, unproven and unknown? For many, evolution makes more ‘sense’ than Creationism; it’s easier to accept roots with primates than believe in a supreme being.
Yet here you are and here I am; doing the strange thing – choosing to believe that God is; and that our roots lie in God’s self (made in God’s likeness). And, on an esoteric level, that is true. We do believe and we do trust God. It’s on the literal day to day existential issues, that our faith wavers.
When we say we believe in God as Creator, we also need to determine our stance on what God knows, sees and does. And, based on the power that we ascribe to God, we also (subconsciously) decide how we relate – do we pray as ones in need of blessings, mercy and forgiveness; or as acquaintances.
These may not always be considered in full, and our attitude towards God may shift over time (usually after a big breakthrough or a disappointment); but these are often answered in our prayer lives and our quiet witness. And those are not always visible to the rest of us.
But we know. And God knows. And that’s where it truly matters. For ultimately, our faith in God is an extremely personal and individual matter. And we have to figure out Who we believe in and why in the issues that count; sometimes in a pinch; especially in crisis situations.
So; is our faith sight based or is our sight faith based? Lord I believe. Please help my unbelief.
