“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” Isaiah 43:2 NLT
Of course, one would be quite in order if thoughts of another fire came to mind. For, who can forget the plot to annihilate the Hebrews, particularly Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah? In fact, one might say that the Fire of Oppression was the name of their experience. All for the sake of faith and fame. Faith, since they clearly refused to follow the status quo in lieu of their convictions (see Daniel 3). Fame as they defied the king who was celebrating his notoriety.
Unfortunately, it is all the same story for many of us. Granted, the water and/or the fire may have subtle differences in structure but it’s just about the same. We seem to be punching in the same frustration clock day after day and with no end in sight. It is true, there’s nothing new under the sun in that regard. The good news is, if the fires of opposition and oppression are not new; then God’s intervention is also guaranteed! It’s part of God’s Salvific Equation. And we are all included as a transformable variable. Our circumstances could change – because of God’s grace.
Furthermore, whether it’s Waters, Fire or Flood; when they come we have the assurance that God is with us, protecting, sustaining and keeping us. By God’s grace we shall not be consumed. Thanks be to God.
