Nougat 16

Amidst all the drama unfolding in the varied war zones globally, Today’s Holy Nougat offers hope and comfort.

Fear God

I remember back in the days when car decals included a picture caption, ‘Fear this ‘. Although offensive, the picture that accompanied the decal often left me wondering how that little man could conquer any enemy. Perhaps he had a secret weapon. I know we do. We have God.

Because God isn’t physically visible, it is easy for many to take God for granted. Some might even argue that we ought to believe in what we can see. To some extent, they have a valid point, but the theory is flawed. For though invisible to the naked eye, we believe in the existence of bacteria, various ailments, other galaxies and Love. In fact, we dedicate an entire day to the celebration of Love. So why not believe in The One Who created us?

Now some might further argue, and rightly so, that belief in the existence of something or someone does not automatically equal fear. Yet, many of us, fear creatures (and other things) without justification. More so when the something is ‘bigger’ than is or poses a threat to our existence. For the most part, God doesn’t threaten our existence – God actually causes us to exist. And that’s the real reason we should fear God. Not a shaky- kneed, cold sweat kind of fear, rather the fear that comes with reverence for the Creator and respect for God’s Godness.

Given that humanity is God’s weakness, we tend to assume that we don’t need to fear God because we can get away with murder. Literally. But that’s a lie. A plain faced lie from the pit of Hell. For if anyone, if anything can destroy the creation, it would be the creator. And God is our Creator. God knows our every flaw, our weaknesses and what makes us tick. (And if God were a Caribbean- style Creator, I know there are days when God would be inclined to say, ‘I brought you into this world, [keep on that path] … and I will take you out.’ For in those instances, we’re acting in ways that do not honour God!!!)

Our fear of God begins with honoring God’s commands. (Yup, I went there.) Just as we follow a manufacturer’s instructions for our devices so that we get the best usage, so it is for one of the greatest creations of all time – you! (Or in my instance, me.) Opting to regularly read the manufacturer’s instruction is equally important. For ourselves and others. We find the critical ones in Exodus 20.

So how about it, will we fear God and honour God’s Word? I know I will.
