Nougat 16

If you had all the money in the world you needed and enough thereafter for anything else you could buy; what else would you get? And for whom? What if you’d saved up for something special? Today’s Holy Nougat requires gentle chewing.

“Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.” ‭‭John‬ ‭12‬:‭3‬, ‭7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Real Love

One version of this narrative tells us that the perfume and storage container represented Mary’s entire life savings. Can you imagine what you’d invest your money into – car, house, stock, bitcoin, new business? And she bought … perfume?! Was she originally intending to open a business? Was it the safest way to save money without fear of theft? Did she have a prophetic word that God would send her to wash Jesus feet and she would need expensive perfume to do so?

And to get down in a crouching position? How low did she have to go? In our claims of love, what would we do for Jesus? Before we answer we should probably think about His Love that counted the cost, recognized that we might be more ungrateful than appreciative, yet became human nevertheless, and died to give us life. Is there anything that is too much to give?

Taking the pose of a servant, she lathed love all over Jesus, and was the first witness to see the risen Jesus. Sacrifice and reward? Maybe. But definitely devotion. Pure, unrestrained and undefiled love!?? What will we give as a sign of our devotion?
