But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Mt 6:33

When a sentence (or in this instance a verse) begins with a “BUT”, I’m often very curious to discover what came before.

The paragraph which precedes this has had pride of place in many a song, secular and sacred; as Jesus invites his listeners – 5000+ men, women & children – to enjoy freedom from anxiety about the basics in life:food, clothing and shelter. Now, if I’m not to have a divided self (Greek transliteration of worry) about those things, what am I to focus on?

Striving for heaven’s rewards and strengthening relationship with Jesus. After which, those things will come. Sounds so easy doesn’t it?

But having spent many years in the Holy Ghost College of Faith and Trust in God; and still NOT yet a graduate, I know it really isn’t as simple. A relationship with Jesus means going out to the margins and mixing with the last and annoying. It means forgiving the vile people who hurt me an peeps, it means taking up the cross DAILY as I walk with him, it means being sought out for signs and wonders; it means being able to say, “Peace, be still” to all life’s storms (AND MEAN IT), including the basic things like food clothes and shelter. Er… How does this work again?

It’s a partnership, a covenant – I let go of the worries, focus first on the Senior Partner, and Jehovah Tsidkenu will not only make me right with God, but he’ll also ensure the other part.

Things still not going as they ought, not to worry; strive (fight against the urge to give up) first of all for God’s face, relax and wait for your reply.

It ain’t easy, but it sure nuff is worth it.

Blessings
