Have you ever had One of Those Days – where Murphy’s Law about everything going wrong seems to be written about you? Guess what … God’s got a Word for us. Consider today’s Holy Nougat
“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:10 KJV
Our human tendency during Those Days is towards frustration. Well, for me it is. And the frustration is usually so complete that it clouds everything; sometimes even carrying over in our relationships. And some folks simply shut down; choosing to cut off from others as a means of coping with the disappointments.
I suspect that the Israelites were having several of Those Days. The nation had long passed its glory days; the temple -which embodied the superiority of their faith over others – lay in ruins. Things were looking desolate. I suspect, given the track record we’ve seen during the exodus and nascent nationhood, that some responded with idolatry.
But God’s Word via the prophet offers an alternative. For in the question directed to Those Days, God chooses to focus on the small things. I see those as the little things we fail to notice in our frustration; rather than the small things that make life frustrating. In either case; God’s Word to us is – ‘Go against the crowd. Do NOT despise the Day of the Small Things.’ ie in the times when overwhelmed tries to dominate; look up! For the God of Your salvation is at hand. God is still in control.
And that’s where Praise comes in
To combat drowning in regret, sorrow, or frustration; we look up to God and grab our lifeline of Praise. When the praise begins, we find it is a bit harder to remain focused on the frustration.
Can we try to identify our little blessings when we face One of Those Days; the Day of the Small Things?
