Nougat 15

Is there a verse that you automatically has you thinking about God’s promises? I’d say today’s Holy Nougat is one of those.

“I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭9:13-15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Not just words to hold on to; but also an image to sear onto our hearts and minds. When last have you looked at the rainbow and remembered God’s promise?

Do you actually believe God keeps the promises?

Have you ever proven God’s promises in your life or someone else’s? What kind of keepsake do you have, or is the rainbow enough?

It is notable that the rainbow is in the clouds, making them visible both in the Heavens and on earth. A reminder to both parties of the covenant made. That never again, regardless of our despicable acts, will God destroy all the earth in such a way. Not that we haven’t tried to test God’s resolve, we certainly do.

So if the rainbow is a symbol of God’s faithfulness, what is ours? Should we have our own symbol that reminds us that we made a promise to our God? Some contexts practice a reminder of baptism service, that takes us back to the place of commitment to Jesus. That is critical for us to remember, but maybe we can select our own reminder; something that prompts us to remember our part in the covenant. Maybe the rainbow.

Remember God’s promise isn’t absence of consequences for our actions; rather it’s the assurance that God will not decimate us all. May our lives prove us equally faithful.
