Recently hurricane Michael swept through the USA leaving devastation and trauma in its wake. One unexpected ‘gift’ was severe power outages; where it is reported that some areas should brace for long-term power loss.
Frightening!
Surprising!
This will have implications for life as folks are used to it – almost everything is generated by electricity. And there’s also the matter of night vision. Not many of us enjoy operating with limited light.
Here’s today’s Holy Nougat
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105 NLT
The psalms were not written in an era of ongoing electrical power. The citizenry did not have the familiarity of auto-lights; theirs was the occasional lamp or lanterns; and the light of the moon at night. Under those conditions, comparison of the divine to light is far different from our understanding, and can only be truly appreciated by those without power after a natural disaster or those for whom electricity is a luxury rather than the norm.
For those of us who haven’t been there, perhaps we could imagine navigating a space in the dark – without fully knowing the layout – and possessing No flashlight or candle! Ouch! For most of us, that describes our natural attempts to traverse life’s pathways.
And then God offers permanent illumination – The Word. GPS and illuminating device all rolled into one. Offering each of us direction along life’s way and into the next life as well as assurance and (perhaps even) surefootedness when the way gets uncertain. Now that’s comforting!
The even better deal is that we have the opportunity to tap into God’s Word even more directly; for, as the gospel writer tells it, ‘God’s Word became flesh and dwells within us’ SHOULD WE SO CHOOSE.
It’s like a special (Black Friday) offer – embrace God’s Word become flesh and get access to God’s Word to direct the feet and the path also!
