Amid worries about Covid-19 is a deeper issue at hand: are we ready for what comes after? The truth is, we begin some of that before death, based on our understanding of God’s promises. Consider the promise in today’s Holy Nougat for example.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 NRSV
What an awesome assurance
That we might find abundant life in Jesus. It brings a myriad of thoughts in my mind: Firstly, that if Christ brings the gift of abundant life, then life outside of Christ is at best, mediocre. That Jesus adds something more, a little ‘je me sais quoi’ , (I don’t know what); a little oomph to my life.
I also realize there’s an ongoing battle for my life – between the thief and the Savior. Yup, there’s someone or something out there desiring that I should be less than my potential to be. And that force is currently programmed to rob , maim or effect devastation In my being.
Ironically, part of the thief’s plan is dependent upon ME.
Yes, it is.
For I am the one who makes the decision regarding alignment. Do I align wholly and soully to the thief or to the Savior? As much as it seems to be a no brainer; it’s not always easy. Because one of the things that’s stolen is my natural ability to discern between the scam and the Truth. So sometimes, I am inclined towards the scam thinking that it is abundant living.
It is NOT.
For abundant living is not to be found in bling and visible symbols. Rather, it’s about love, power (over the scammer, and the schemes to destroy us) and sound reasoning. But we first have to believe that, instead of the lies we’ve been given in exchange for our lives. We have to each come to that conclusion that we deserve and desire the real abundant life. One which comes with choosing justice and peace and joy from fixing our eyes on God’s Spirit rather than the scam. It’s a daily choice for each of us; not only me.
I am on that learning experience right now.
