“Then He comes and finds them sleeping; and He tells Peter, “Simon, you’re asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?”
Mark 14:37 TLV
I’ve been there.
Deep rooted fatigue that sits on a body and saps all of our energy. The kind that has zero regard for what is on our plate, because it’s too muddled to notice or care about ought else.
When we’re gathered and praying, and someone says amen; but we’re still at ‘Dear Lord’, and the snores have betrayed us. Or we begin praying and the next thing we know time has elapsed and we can’t recall what happened.
Sometimes, it’s based on our emotional state; other times it’s stress, and for some it’s overworking taking its toll on us. Whatever the reason, I acknowledge its legitimacy and encourage us to avoid getting to that point.
Because I’ve found that the muddled state usually means we are vulnerable – physically, mentally and emotionally. And in Peter’s case it also resulted in spiritual vulnerability.
Yes my dear. It happens.
I suspect Peter wondered whether he’d have overcome the temptation to deny knowing Jesus had he stayed up praying. (Remember Jesus invited them to pray a while, LEST they fell into temptation). Plus, we also must remember that once we yield ourselves to God, we’re marked as targets for temptation. And what better time to lure us than when we’re sleepy?
But God.
When we do recognize that it was fatigue overshadowing us, let’s pray. If only to ask for divine coverage and wisdom in whatever decisions we face. Perhaps we may need to hand pressing matters over to Jesus, if it’s stress or emotionally based. Whatever the case, it helps to pray our way past the fatigue, unless sleep is what the Lord prescribed.
So yes, we might be caught sleeping. Nevertheless, let’s also be caught praying, for we never know when temptation may strike our way.
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
