Nougat 14

What does it mean for us to publicly say, ‘There is ONE Lord’? Especially as persons who proclaim God as Trinity (Three in One). Consider today’s Holy Nougat

“There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:5-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Within this context, the Greek root used for Lord is not a transliteration of the Hebrew terms used in the Hebrew canon. There, Lord is either reference to Adonai or YHWH; descriptors offered by God about God’s nature. Rather, it is rooted in ‘kurios’ which, according to Strong’s concordance, refers to:

1) he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, lord

1a) the possessor and disposer of a thing

1a1) the owner; one who has control of the person, the master

1a2) in the state: the sovereign, prince, chief, the Roman emperor

1b) is a title of honour expressive of respect and reverence, with which servants greet their master

1c) this title is given to: God, the Messiah

Declaring that there is One Lord is thus stating without apology that God’s rulership – in our lives and in all creation – supersedes ALL others. It is a bold proclamation in a world where personal power and influence dominate all spheres of human life. It suggests that we have decided to operate only by God’s directive; despite the conflicting voices and personalities that clamor for leadership over our lives.

But it is also a dangerous proclamation. For it also indicates that we live in Humility – not seeking to use our personal power in negative or abusive ways. Nor do we use the power invested in us by our One Lord in retaliatory ways – not even when we think it is well deserved. (Of course this may seem dangerous only to our own sense of self; but if we all operate under the fullness of that understanding, it has the power to revolutionize the world).

Additionally, perhaps even finally, we read One Lord as the final Word in the Trinitarian and/or any other doctrinal debate. In the then world of differences within the Body, this was a reminder of The One Who has the final say in all matters. Simply put,

there is One Lord.

Are we still ready to declare that publicly? If yes, may our actions reflect this wherever we are.
