“I have no one else like him who will genuinely care about you—” Philippians‬ ‭2:20‬ ‭TLV

What a recommendation!

He was but a youth, at the age where folks assume frivolity is the priority. Yet, he would be known as the best person to care for an entire fellowship. That was Timothy. And this wasn’t just any church; the Philippian Church was the first European fellowship established by Paul, in a region named after Alexander the Great’s dad. It was also the home church of Lydia, the seller of purple, and it was the city where the trafficked girl received her release. During his imprisonment, the Philippians were ready to meet Paul’s needs in whatever way he required. This was the church being placed under the trusteeship of Timothy.

With such an auspicious background, one might be inclined to wonder about Timothy’s candidacy for leadership in Philippi; yet this is NOT Paul’s concern. Paul, who knew the heart of the Philippian church as well as the heart of his mentee Timothy, knew that they were well matched. And that was what mattered. For, they all knew that Paul had the best interests of Timothy and the Philippians at heart.

Interestingly, there is no mention of Timothy’s youth, as the subsequent verses speak to Paul’s confidence in Timothy as a son.

Can you imagine God saying those words about us? To know God is wholly convinced of our compassion, or any other gift we operate in, such that God publicly commends us to whomever or wherever God is sending us. I can only imagine what a difference it would make for our ministries.

As we continue to work through our calling, we may also find ourselves wondering whether we are equipped for the task or tasks set before us. Yet we recognize that when we are called by God to minister, be it an entire congregation or with one individual; God, Who has an even more powerful view than Paul, is the One Who sends us, and has FULL confidence in our ability.

So, equipped with this knowledge, let seek God’s direction for the work set before us.
