“It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.” Hebrews 11:8 NLT
No one kicked him out. No one offended him. He still loved them. But on God’s command, he upped and left. Him, his wife, his nephew and family, their servants and cattle – left home.
There was a time when I could not for a moment imagine how Abram could do that. I wondered all sorts of things, especially in a world where travel usually requires a destination. But, of a truth, any one who would heed God’s call MUST be prepared to leave the comfort and familiar of home for the unknown journey of salvation.
Even when we remain in the same physical location; the moment we say ‘yes’ to Jesus, some things immediately change. We might not notice it, but it’s there. At least if we are going to be consistent with heeding God.
The thing is, this life of Faith is individual. It’s not one size fits all. The blessings, the joys, the trials, the testing, the gifts of God’s Spirit … they all manifest differently – even in the same household. And none of us can predict in advance how we respond to each situation. There are some blessings that we cannot receive until AFTER we’ve been through the fire , while others walk into those blessings straight away. Some lose everything, others seem to have the Midas touch (we might not know how many hours of prayer brought them there).
Like Abraham, we know where we are destined for – our heavenly inheritance; our Land of Promise. Exactly how we get there remains uncertain. It is a journey of faith. It requires the willingness to yield to the move of God’s Spirit, sometimes beyond our wildest expectations. We WILL get tempted; that’s par for the course. But we press on, like Abraham, equipped with our Faith and that which fuels our Faith, our Bibles. And with prayer as our communication device, we press on.
With Christ we can. By God’s Grace we will.
