Have you been keeping up with the news? It’s been a tough set of events which seem to overwhelm the good that’s happening around us. And sometimes the temptation is to cover one’s head and pretend all is well, or to get so involved in advocating for change that our true self is forgotten. We might even think that it doesn’t make sense for us to pray, since nothing going to change. But today’s Holy Nougat™ challenges that notion. Take a nibble for yourself
Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.” Mark 10:27 NLT
What are the impossibilities we face in our own life? And do you, like me, see the futility of expecting global change in the face of all the mess around us. Yet we have this assurance from Jesus that it’s not impossible. So where does that assurance leave us when we pray and nothing seems to change?
While imbibing this Nougat for myself it struck me that there is a difference between possibility and actuality. Possibility requires Faith or at least a willingness to encounter the odds on a very intentional level. And for those of us who don’t process Faith in God very well, it could then be about the nasty business of permutations and combinations involved in the Laws of Probability. Ironically, if we utilised the Laws of Probability in regard to Impossibility , we’d come to the mathematical conclusion that NOTHING is actually impossible, it’s just that the odds are exceptionally low. (You know when the calculations take us to the zillionth power of n and x, we lose hope.) Yet we take many of these probability ‘facts’ at face value.
In actuality, many of us live most of our lives believing in the improbable, yet we find it hard to trust God with the Laws of Probability called Faith.
It shouldn’t be because we can’t ‘see’ God; for we accept as real (actuality) many things, concepts and persons which we haven’t seen or proven for ourselves.
It shouldn’t be because God didn’t respond positively to our last major prayer request, because we continue to trust others who’ve disappointed us. And worse yet, we’ve also disappointed others who’ve believed in us.
It shouldn’t be that we perceive that God will not honor our request, because God has honored the impossible requests of countless others (think Abraham pleading for Sodom and Gomorrah, Gideon skiing for a fleece, Simeon and Anna living to see the Messiah for themselves, Saul being caught en route to murder the Followers of the Way and the list goes on).
But then, it could be all of those and more. Are we willing to challenge our unbelief today, to beat the odds and allow the Laws of Probability to become actuality by believing that WITH GOD, nothing is impossible? It doesn’t mean God will say yes; it means we stepped out in Faith.
See the difference? In actuality, it’s really a matter of Faith.
